East is East is a photo-essay which explores one of the most recognisable East London Flower Markets in the world: Columbia Road Flower Market in Shoreditch. One of the most photographed markets in London, I tell the story of the flowers and plants being sold and bought in an unconventional photographic approach.
By photographing the flowers, petals and stems left behind on the pavements and gutters, I capture the ugly beauty of the fragments tossed to one side, which provides a contrasting narrative to the fresh, carefully staged market that most are familiar with.
I documented this floral journey from splendour to demise through repeated visits to the market. East is East questions the ideology of traditional beauty in identifying that beauty can also be realised in that which is undesirable and discarded.
Overcome and Rebuild is my interpretation of new memorial space of the Tower One World Trade Centre. Reflecting on that tragic day, I came to learn that a family member had perished in this tragedy only 6 months after the event. Whilst in New York in 2007 and my first visit to the site I shot this through my own perspective & interpretation of the space.
